Update to Debbie's story submitted October 5, 2001, and you'll find it below! Thanks Debbie! *smile*
My name is Debbie and I have Mosaic Down Syndrome. I am thirty nine and live with my parents in Texas. I stumbled over this web site when I was out visiting with my Aunt in California. I always felt alone having Mosaic Down Syndrome because I never knew anyone else who had it. I was tested at the Children's Hospital in Houston when I was but a toddler.

My mother noticed how slow I was developing and started on her search of what was wrong. I guess I was three or so when I was diagnosed at the Children's Hospital. My difficulties were in math, grammar and I had a speech problem. I couldn't say my Ra's. I worked very hard to get rid of this problem since I was often ridiculed on the playground. I was and am a very sensitive person to my environment. My Special Education teachers were compassionate and kind. I learned to love stories and writing. I feel my strengths are reading and writing. Math is a problem. I would say I am at third grade level or so in this area. My parents always had faith in me and never gave up. I remember my mother trying for hours to teach me how to tie my shoes. I must admit, I thought I'd never get the hang of it! I can proudly say I can tie my shoes with my eyes closed! Middle School was hard as was High School but my parents and teachers prevailed. I graduated with my class in 1980.
At the present I am not working due to some health problems. I do have two volunteer jobs that I enjoy very much. I continue to educate myself on whatever I am interested in. I love poetry and read Yeats and have read Robert Frost. I consider my self truly blessed. I see myself as an intelligent, growing adult who wants to be a part of life. I have a wonderful family. Thank you for this web site.

My name is Debbie and my story is in the personal stories but my e-mail changed. Let's see what I can tell you of me. I am a forty year old woman who has Mosaic Down syndrome. I live with my parents here in Amarillo, Texas. I don't know the number of my cells but I can tell you I was tested at the Children's Hospital in Houston. Unfortunately the doctors didn't tell my parents the numbers. I was told that all the doctors and researchers sat down with me and played with me.
I am not sure what else to say since my story is already in the personal stories. I can tell you what I am doing now. I am enrolled in our two year college here. I am taking a Continuing Adult Education class. It is about Women Writer's. So far I am keeping up. I sit up at the front so I can see what the instructor writes on the chalk board. I am nearsighted, I have stribismus and have rapid eye movement. Despite this I am able to read. I love books! Some of the writers she has talked about I knew. The class is about writers in the Middle Ages up to the present.
My reading and writing I have learned from teacher's who were very patient with me. I am able to read John Donne's poetry (which I love), Emily Dickinson's as well as Robert Frost and W.B.Yeats. I would say my reading comprehension is good although I do ask questions if a paragraph is worded a little differently. I usually have this problem with voting especially if it has to do with land developments or when something has to be passed. I am a avid newspaper reader and try to keep up on the activities where I live.
I love to write and write poems occasionally. I admire people like Sylvia Platt who could write a poem about anything. I used to write stories but have not written anything like that in a long while. I keep a journal and write in it once in a while.
My math skills are a little better but I use the calculator quite a bit. I know I need to work on it but math is hard for me sometimes and I prefer to read a book than work on my math skills. I have my own checking account and pay my own phone bill. I am on Social Security and Social Security Supplemental. I have not been able to work for a while. I don't always tell people that because when they see me they expect me to be a working person. I look like any average person so people just expect that. I have two volunteer jobs I enjoy and try to stay busy.
My health problems keep me from having a stable job. I don't know if I mentioned that last time. I have stomach trouble from time to time and have something called Fibromyalgia and Raynolds. Raynolds is where the vessels narrow and contract. When it is cold my finger nails turn blue and my toe nails do too. I don't get too down because of it. I turn to books, sometimes travel and keep up on current events. I love the computer!
If anyone is interested, please comment below. I love e-mails! If I don't get to you right away it because I share the computer with my dad. He is into stocks. Let me know if you are on this web site. I don't return e-mails I don't know. Bye! Debbie
